What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a design methodology that seeks to create sustainable and agriculturally productive landscapes—from back-yard gardens to multi-acre properties—by mimicking and strategically leveraging the processes of natural ecosystems.

The term was coined by combining the words permanent and agriculture, so as to distinguish the practice from conventional agriculture (which can only be practiced for a limited time before it destroys the ecosystems and natural resources on which it depends).

We like to think that permaculture’s application has the potential to liberate human energy much like fossil fueled industrialization has done, even while repairing the ecological degradation that we inherit.
